3520 N 7th St, Tacoma
This North Tacoma Craftsman is all about opportunity. With 6 bedrooms - 2 on each floor - there’s room for family, housemates, guests, a studio, or a home office. The main floor features craftsman details like oak hardwood floors, archways, cased openings, and sturdy trim. You’ll see that most things need some renovation or repair so they can get back to the business of being beautiful. We’ve priced it well below the recently appraised value for the home in its current condition, so let that encourage you as you take a closer look. Take the tour, dream your dreams, see what you think you can make of it.
What you don’t need to work on is the location. Set just a couple blocks from the scenic University of Puget Sound campus, and just a block from the bus line on 6th Avenue where there are coffee shops, ice cream, and all manner of restaurants (Mexican, Vietnamese, Italian, Indian, South American, New American - you get the picture) are an easy walk away.
Potential is huge and the location is strong; roll up your sleeves - it’s renovation time.

Living Room
The front door opens into the living room with its oak hardwoods, lots of windows, and a fireplace where you might consider adding a gas insert. The cased opening on the left leads to the dining room where the hardwoods continue. Actually, you’ll find these oak floors in the hall and two main floor bedrooms as well. Take note of the craftsman style baseboard and window trim throughout the main floor as well. These could use work, but the style is already here.
As you continue to move through the living room, you’ll start to see that the layout is circular, with the dining room opening into the sun porch and the kitchen, and the kitchen opening into the hall where the bedrooms, full bath, and stairwell are found.
Dining Room
The dining room gets lots of light from the sun porch at the back of the house and the window on the west side. A doorway leads straight into the kitchen on the left. It will take some elbow grease, but this has the makings of a beautiful dining area.
Sunporch
An archway leads from the dining room to the sun porch at the back of the house where there's access to the deck with stairs down to the yard. Find laundry hookups on the other side of the partition with an opening into the kitchen on the left just ahead of the glass doors to the deck.
The sunporch floor is in rough shape, but there's great light from this long line of windows looking south over the back yard and side alley. I can imagine it as sitting area, a place to read, write, or visit, a place for houseplants, a place to sit and enjoy the natural light. Perhaps there’s potential for redesigning the laundry area so that side could feature a small breakfast table. There are so many possibilities to consider when touring this home; get creative.
Kitchen
The kitchen is set in the center of the main floor with doorways to the dining room, sunporch, and hall. There's space for a dishwasher beside the sink. With an arched opening to the sunporch, and a decent amount of counter space, this kitchen has good features, but needs work. It’s important to remember that this house is listed below the appraised value.
Two Main Floor Bedrooms
One of two main floor bedrooms with oak hardwoods. This room faces N. 7th St. and overlooks the front yard, with another window looking east.
Image how pretty these rooms will become with refinished floors, and with some love for the trim.
Here you see the second main floor bedroom at the back of the house with a window looking south across the back yard. Again, the room still retains craftsman details in the oak floor, baseboard, and trim around the windows and doors.
Full Bathroom
The full bath is located on the main floor between the 2 bedrooms and within easy reach of the living room. Wainscot offers a bright vintage character.
Second Floor Bedrooms
Upstairs find 2 bedrooms. These rooms make up the entire top floor, so head up the stairs and you’ll find them on opposite sides of the landing with one facing west and the other east.
Basement - Family Room
The stairwell to the basement leads to a family room area that could be set up for movies, a playroom, exercise room, whatever is needed. With two bedrooms and a 3/4 bath, this level could also live more like an apartment, so it’s potentially a good place for housemates, or maybe just more space for the family to spread out. Along with the rooms you see here, there is 315 sq ft of unfinished basement which includes a 2 car sized tandem garage, and a little additional space.
3/4 Bathroom
Located at the bottom of the stairs, this 3/4 bath with a shower is the second bathroom in the home, and is conveniently placed for anyone with a bedroom down in this lower level.
Two Bedrooms
These bedrooms are part of the finished basement area. They’re located just off the downstairs family room and have easy access to the 3/4 bath on the same floor. Having 2 bedrooms on all 3 levels of the house offers lots of flexibility!
Outside
On this 6,000 square foot lot there’s room to garden, let pets run, or kids play. This is a fairly basic, no-nonsense yard. A side alley leads from N. 7th St between 3520 and the neighboring home. It's just a 2 minute walk to coffee or pizza on 6th Ave!
The fenced back yard borders the alley which leads to the attached 2 car tandem garage. Stairs from the back yard lead up to the deck and into the sunporch. There's also a covered patio area under the deck.
Location
We mentioned a bit about the location in our introduction, but let’s really get into it. This home is in North Tacoma, just down the street from UPS, and also a 4 minute drive from the Proctor District and all it has to offer (like groceries, shops, a farmers’ market, bowling alley, movie theater, etc), but is even closer to the 6th Ave District. As in, really, really close; this house is on N. 7th, after all.
6th Ave contains some of Tacoma’s favorite restaurants and coffee shops, and you’ll see several of them in our list below. For example, for your daily caffeine, or a special coffee treat, walk to Metronome Coffee in 2 minutes or Valhalla in 8. Need sweets? You can reach Ice Cream Social for homemade, small-batch ice cream in seasonal flavors (dairy-free options included) on fresh waffle cones in 9 minutes. You might even begin to wish it was further away (but probably not). Looking for a date night? Walk 12 minutes to Primo Grill for craft cocktails, and a delicious blend of NW and Italian flavors. Just want to stretch your legs? Walk 6 minutes to UPS for a stroll around campus, or 11 minutes to the 15 acre Jefferson Park with paths, a playground and sprayground, and plenty of space to toss a frisbee or kick a soccer ball.
If you’re driving, you can be downtown at the Tacoma Art Museum in 10 minutes. Which means you can be all kinds of places downtown in about that amount of time (museums, restaurants, bars, your office).
