Sixth Avenue began its life as a through-line across the city for travelers on their way to the Narrows bridge. Since State Route 16 was developed, though, 6th Ave has established itself as a vibrant neighborhood in its own right. Beyond serving its function as the dividing line between the north and south sides of Tacoma, 6th Ave also stands as a main drag of activity for the city.
Lined with a wide variety of bars, restaurants, boutique shops, record stores, churches, grocery stores, tattoo parlors, and cafes, 6th Ave is a sprawling street that represents the breadth of Tacoma's culture. The days on 6th Ave are bustling, with workers racing to grab lunch and residents and tourists exploring the colorful businesses that populate the avenue. The nightlife maintains this vivacious energy.
On either side of 6th Ave, you'll find cozy homes that run the gamut from starters to more high-end fare. The makeup of the people who live along 6th Ave is as varied as the businesses: several schools are nearby, from K-12, so families tend to settle down here; with the University of Puget Sound just up the way, though, many college students find affordable housing in the area.
